Setúbal is a city of history and remains a busy port, which has gained importance since the Roman occupation. When it was conquered from the Moors in 1217, it was given protected status through the Order of Santiago. The city became an important economic center thanks to the canning, ceramics and fishing industries, and also became a popular vacation spot for the aristocracy during the 15th century. Setúbal is closely associated with the life and work of the acclaimed 18th-century poet Manuel Maria Barbosa do Bocage (1765-1805), and the house where he was born is now a museum. Another important figure associated with the city is the 18th century opera singer Luísa Todi.
There are many places and attractions to visit in Setúbal. These include the 16th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria da Graça with its beautiful 18th-century tiles, the Gothic church of the Monastery of Jesus and its Manueline columns, an archaeological museum with intriguing remains of the Roman occupation and the Castle of São Filipe, dating from the 16th century and built by order of King Philip II of Spain, in 1595.
